It’s fascinating how easy it is to forget a sense of self.
Maybe if you didn’t have one in the first place, you wouldn’t miss it when it inevitably wanders off.
Wandering is good though, and just on the other side of forgetting is remembering.
When I was a kid, my room was a place I could go to simply exist. There was nothing to prove, nothing to perform, unless the performance was for myself. It was a place free from the judgment of others. I was safe in solitude.
I’ve since wandered plenty and found myself forgetful often. I’ve been fortunate to have moments of remembering. I imagine it will happen again and again, a forgetting and a remembering of which version of me feels the most like home.
Here, I see myself, at peace in my room, reminded that I’m the same as I always was.

In My Room is a self portrait project born from a moment of inspiration in the studio, answering a nostalgic siren call from my younger youth.
The digital exhibition features a collection of self portraits reflecting a time in my life when youthful self expression was introduced to a larger culture of heteronormative restrictions.
The resulting reaction was to retreat to a place of a safety and peace - in my room.
